Horse riding in Lanzarote: everything you need to know
Whether you have ridden all your life or never sat on a horse, here is everything worth knowing before you book: what to wear, what it costs, whether the children can come, how we choose your horse, and how booking works. These are the questions people actually ask us, answered in full.
If you have never ridden
Most people who go horse riding with us in Lanzarote have never sat on a horse before. The whole morning is built around that, not around experienced riders, so being a complete beginner is the normal way to arrive.
- Do I need any experience to go horse riding in Lanzarote?
- No. Most people who ride with us have never sat on a horse before, and it is the normal way to arrive, not the exception. You get one of the calm horses, a guide with you for as long as you want, and a group that goes at the pace of whoever is least sure.
- Will I have to trot or canter?
- Only if you want to. Complete beginners walk the whole way, with the guide beside them. If you already ride and want to trot or canter, say so when you book: you get a horse to match and, once the guide has seen you have control, you can pick up the pace. We split groups by level so nobody is pushed or held back.
- What if I am nervous?
- That is the normal booking here, not the awkward one. You get on in the yard on flat ground, with someone holding the horse, and you walk a few circles until it stops feeling strange. If you would rather the guide held a lead rope the whole ride, they hold it the whole ride. Nobody is talked into anything.
What to wear, and what we provide
There is very little to organise. Come in long trousers and closed shoes you can walk in, and we take care of the helmets.
- What should I wear to go horse riding?
- Long trousers and closed shoes you can walk in. Not flip-flops, as they leave your foot unprotected. A hat and sun cream are a good idea most of the year, as the light here is strong.
- Are helmets provided?
- Yes. Certified riding helmets are included and everybody wears one. There is nothing you need to buy or bring.
- Is there a weight limit for riders?
- Yes, for the horse’s sake: our limit is 120 kg per rider. Tell us your weight when you book and we will confirm the right horse for you before you come, so nobody is turned away at the yard. We would rather sort it in advance than on the day.
- What happens if the weather is bad?
- In high wind or extreme summer heat we may move your time, and we do not ride when it is not safe or kind for the horses. If that affects your booking we let you know in advance, not when you arrive.
Riding with children
The minimum age to ride a horse is seven: from seven to fourteen they ride their own horse, always accompanied by an adult, and from fourteen they can ride on their own without an adult. For the littlest ones there is a gentle ride inside the grounds. A family with mixed ages and nerves is exactly the group we are set up for.
- Can children go horse riding in Lanzarote?
- The minimum age to ride a horse is 7. From 7 to 14 they ride their own horse, always accompanied by an adult. From 14 they can ride on their own, without an adult. For the littlest ones there is a gentle ride inside our grounds. Tell us their ages when you book and we will sort the best option.
- Is it suitable for a family with different ages and abilities?
- It is one of the things we do best. Groups are split by level and the pace is set around whoever is least sure, so a nervous parent and a confident teenager can come out together, with riders from 7 to 14 accompanied by an adult. If you want the ride entirely to yourselves, ask about a private ride for your group.
Choosing your ride, and what it costs
An hour or two on horseback, every price published with taxes included. Here is how to pick the right one and what you will pay.
- How much does horse riding in Lanzarote cost?
- The 1-hour ride is €55 and the 2-hour ride is €85 per rider, with taxes included. Private rides for your group alone are also available: just ask us. You pay at the stables on the day, never online.
- Which ride should I choose?
- If you have never ridden or you are bringing children, start with the 1-hour ride, with views of a volcano. If you want to get properly out into the landscape, take the 2-hour ride, with views of the sea and the volcanoes. Either one can be done as a private ride, with nobody else in the group.
- How is my horse chosen?
- We keep around ten horses, all well looked after and trained only for these rides. Your guide picks yours on the day, from your height, your build and how much you have ridden, so you get the most out of it. There is no best horse and no worst one. If you have a preference, say so and we will do what we can, and before you set off you are told your horse’s name and what it is like.
Booking, pick-up and payment
You do not pay anything on the website. You book on WhatsApp, we confirm the horses and the time, and you pay at the stables on the day.
- How do I book a ride?
- The quickest way is WhatsApp: tap the button, tell us how many of you there are and roughly when you would like to come, and we reply to confirm the horses and the time. We ride Monday to Saturday, morning and afternoon. You can also email or call. There is no payment online.
- Do I pay online when I book?
- No. You book by WhatsApp or a quick message, we confirm the horses, the time and the pick-up, and you pay at the stables on the day. Nothing is charged on the website, and your place is only held once we have confirmed it.
- Do you pick up from my hotel?
- Tell us where you are staying when you book and we will let you know whether we can pick you up and what it costs, confirmed before you commit, not after. Lanzarote is small, so wherever you are the stables are not far.
